Top 10 Things to Do at Salt Creek Recreation Area: Day Trip from Port Angeles
Salt Creek Recreation Area is a stunning 196-acre park just 15 miles (about a 20-minute drive) west of Port Angeles, and it’s hands-down one of our favorite spots in the region. Whether you’re an RV traveler, a tent camper, or simply planning a fun day trip, Salt Creek offers breathtaking water views and an up-close look at the incredible marine life of the Pacific Northwest.
With nearly 80% of the campsites perched high on a bluff overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca, camping here feels like waking up in a postcard. We visited Salt Creek during a weekend getaway to Port Angeles and absolutely fell in love.
Even if you’re only visiting for a few hours, there’s so much to keep the entire family entertained. Keep reading to find out why Salt Creek might just become your next favorite coastal escape, too.

1. Explore Tongue Point Marine Sanctuary
Tongue Point is a must-visit and the main draw of Salt Creek! Located near Outlook #4 on the park map, this rocky outcrop extends into the sea and is accessible via a staircase leading from the bluff to the beach.
As a designated Marine Life Sanctuary, visitors are encouraged to admire but not remove any shells, rocks, or driftwood, ensuring the preservation of this incredible marine habitat.
When we visited, the tide was high, preventing us from reaching the beach. However, the sight of the milky blue waves crashing against the shore, seagulls soaring above, and Urchin Rock standing majestically in the distance created a breathtaking scene. I could have sat there for hours, simply soaking in the fresh ocean air and the beauty of the coastline.
2. Salt Creek Tidepools
At low tide, Tongue Point transforms into an extraordinary tidepooling destination. Explore the intertidal zone to discover crabs, sea stars, mussels, sea anemones, and other fascinating marine creatures. Be sure to check the tide schedule in advance to make the most of your visit!
3. Scenic Walk with Stunning Views
While the kids play, take some time to enjoy a leisurely walk along the edge of the bluff. The route passing through the RV sites (see Outlook #1 in the map above for reference) offers panoramic views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
If you’re up for a longer stroll, follow the walking path (marked in red on the map) to soak in more of the stunning coastal scenery. We visited in spring and walked from the playground upto Tongue Point and back which made it a leisurely walk little under a mile, perfect for a rainy spring day in PNW.
If walking isn’t an option, you can drive through the park and stop at designated parking areas to take in the views.
4. Whale and Bird Watching
Near the staircase leading to the beach at Tongue Point, you’ll find a Whale Trail sign—this marks a prime location for spotting marine life. Keep an eye out for orcas, humpback whales, and porpoises migrating through the Strait, as well as otters and harbor seals playing in the waters below.
Salt Creek is a bird watcher’s paradise, with opportunities to spot bald eagles, ospreys, and a variety of seabirds. Bring binoculars for an even better experience!
5. Diving at Urchin Rock
If you’re a scuba diving enthusiast, Salt Creek offers an exciting underwater experience. Many divers head out to Urchin Rock to explore its rich marine biodiversity. While we haven’t personally tried it, you will find divers gearing up here!
6. WWII Bunkers
History buffs will enjoy exploring the remnants of World War II bunkers at the park. See Camp Hayden area in the map above. These concrete structures were once part of a coastal defense system and now serve as a fascinating glimpse into the past.
If we had more time, we would have hiked to the bunkers. My kid would love just exploring these structure.
7. Playground and Sports Fields
Families with kids will appreciate the park’s playground, basketball court, and other sports fields. These areas provide a great way to keep little ones entertained when they’re not exploring the shoreline.
The playground is located neat the main entrance. It has swings and slides that will keep kids busy for a while. Our 3 year old made the most of this playground 🙂 while us parents took turns to enjoy the scenic views from the bluff.
8. Striped Peak Trail
For those looking for a more adventurous hike, the Striped Peak Trail offers a moderately challenging trek through lush forest, leading to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the Strait.
This is a ~5 mile, 850ft elevation gain hike starting from Salt Creek Recreation area near Port Angeles. You get views of the strait along this forested trail. If you are traveling with kids, then I’d go upto ~1 mile. At ~1 mile, there is a view of the cove below and a fork that takes you to the cove which is quite popular among hikers.
9. RV and Camping
Salt Creek Recreation Area is well-equipped for camping, with water-view campsites, picnic tables, fire pits, and restroom facilities. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak season, as this park is a popular camping destination.
I think this is one of the best campsites in PNW where practically every site has a gorgeous view. Camping at Salt Creek is on our to-do list whenever we visit Port Angeles area next.
10. Crescent Beach
This is a 1.5 mile stretch of beautiful sandy beach located right next to (west of) Salt Creek Recreation Area. It is a gorgeous cove to go kayaking or paddle boarding and even surfing when the tide is right. We saw surfers dotting the waves when we visited in March. During low tides, you can walk from Tongue Point to Crescent Beach
Because this is a private beach (not part of Salt Creek Recreation Area), you need to pay fees for day use. Or you can camp/RV/rent a cabin across the beach to wake up to the sounds of the ocean. Even if you don’t stop by the beach, just driving by this path will provide stunning views of the Olympic landscape.

Salt Creek Recreation Area (google map link) is located on Washington State Route 112, 20 minutes west of downtown Port Angeles.
Where To Stay
No better place to stay than at Salt Creek campground. It does get busy in summer.
You can also check out other campgrounds, hotels, rentals, motels, RV parks in this stretch. Any stay option near Port Angeles downtown, or near Port Crescent or around Lake Sutherland will be convenient.
Tips for Visiting Salt Creek
- Estimated Activity Time – Salt Creek is best done as a daytrip from Port Angeles. I would plan for minimum 1 hour if you just want to scratch the surface of this place, drive by and take a few photo-ops. We spent 3-4 hours here – kid playing in the park, us parents taking turns to walk along the bluff trail and then enjoying the scenery at Tongue Point.

- Food – Not available at the location, but you will find plenty of options in Port Angeles downtown. Blackberry Cafe (more popular) and Family Kitchen on Strait of Juan De Fuca Hwy / Hwy 112 are the closest options.

Final Thoughts
Salt Creek Recreation Area is a must visit if you are in Port Angeles. It would be a stretch to do a day trip from Seattle, but maybe doable during long summer days.
