Garfield Ledges Trail Step-by-Step Guide
The hiking guide is broken down into 3 steps – Trailhead to the top, At the viewpoint, Back to Trailhead + River Access.
Trailhead to the top [45 mins]
The Garfield Ledges hike maintains a steady ascent for the majority of the trail, but the incline remains manageable for hikers of various ages and fitness levels.
As soon as you set out on the path, you’ll be greeted by the refreshing, humid air and the classic Pacific Northwest ambiance, with towering trees, lush ferns, and verdant greenery surrounding you.
Along the way, you’ll find convenient spots to pause and catch your breath, such as large rocks or tree-lined cutouts situated alongside the trail. At around the 0.7-mile mark, you’ll reach a viewpoint that offers a glimpse of the mountains in the distance. That is your hint that you are on the last stretch of your hike towards the vista.
At the Viewpoint [30 mins]
While you may have seen photographs of the Garfield Ledges vista before, nothing can truly prepare you for the awe-inspiring experience of witnessing this view in person. The sweeping panorama stretches out before you, with a stunning array of mountains, the intersection of rivers below, and a lush valley that seems to extend endlessly. The sheer scale and beauty of this landscape will leave you breathless.
During our visit, we had the entire vista to ourselves, allowing us to savor the moment. We spent nearly 20 minutes simply taking in the breathtaking scenery and fully immersing ourselves in the moment.
To make the most of this experience, be sure to bring a satisfying snack or light meal to enjoy while you linger at the top. The temptation to simply sit and soak in the view will be strong, and you’ll want to allow ample time to fully appreciate the beauty of this place.
Need a little extra motivation for the climb?
A short climb, a big view, and a proud little-hiker moment — this Middle Fork adventure deserves a sticker.
Back to Trailhead + River Access [30 mins + 30 mins]
Getting down would take you not more than 30 to 40 mins. The slightly slower pace with kids will help you notice a few more trees on the way which feels nice.
Once you’re back at the trailhead, you cannot not hear the flowing river right at the trail head behind the parking lot. There are a few picnic tables that you can use for a meal or light snack. We decided to get down to the river for a few mins. The water is ice cold but its fun to dip your legs in after a hike.

Estimated Activity Time
You can estimate ~1.5-2 hours for this hiking activity. Add to that your drive time to and back, plus if you end up spending additional time in the area.
Kid and Family Trip Report
- Infants (upto 1 year) – Parents can easily carry kids in a carrier. But do know the trail is all uphill. So if you are not used to hiking with a carrier, then expect to take longer time.
- Toddlers (1-3 years) – New walkers would need to be watched at all times as the trail is all uphill and steep. It is not dangerous, but you cannot let the little ones just be on their own. You will be pre-occupied watching them.
- Pre-school (3-5 years) and above – Can do this trail easily but might complain about the uphill climb. Bring some treats to keep them happy.
- Families – The hike length is short at 2 miles, but the elevation gain might not suit older parents with any knee problems or who enjoy walking flat paths more.
Amenities
- Restroom facilities – Vault toilet available. Alternatively, you can use restrooms at the gas station at Tanner / North Bend before reaching the trailhead.
- Cellular network – There is no cellular network once you enter the Middle Fork road.
Food
There are no food options inside the Middle Fork area, so remember to bring your own food and water. However, there are many options along the way. Listing some locations with a cluster of restaurants and our favorites in each location –
- North Bend – Rio Bravo for mexican food, its outdoor patio and view of Mt.Si.
- Snoqualmie downtown – Snoqualmie brewery and taproom
- Issaquah downtown – Coconut Thai for thai food
Garfield Ledges Trip Planning
- Day trip – Garfield Ledges Trail is a fantastic day trip activity from Seattle. Combine it with some riverside time at the nearby Camp Brown picnic area. Or stop by other attractions in the area such as Rattlesnake lake or Snoqualmie Falls. Or add some park time with kids at Snoqualmie Community Park.
- Weekday evening trip – The hike itself takes no more than 1.5-2 hours roundtrip. So you could do this hike even on a weekday evening in summer, when the sun sets after 8pm. As long as you can reach the trailhead by 6 PM, you will have enough time to hike to the top, enjoy the views and return to the trail head before sundown.
- Best time to visit – Spring, summer and fall.
Final Thoughts
I would highly recommend Garfield Ledges as an easy local kid-friendly hike near Seattle and Eastside area. The proximity of this beautiful natural area to an urban centre makes it easy on parents to take the kids without too much planning. We made it a parents’ wellness day outing without the kids and took a break from the routine.
