Rosario Beach at Deception Pass State Park
Rosario beach in Deception Pass State Park is a small beach cove on the southwest corner of Fidalgo island. Deception Pass State Park is spread across Whidbey Island and Fidalgo island, which are joined by the Deception Pass bridge.
Given it lays roughly in the rainshadow area, it is said to receive less rainfall and it is laregly snow-free which makes it an aswesome outing for winter.
Rosario Beach is an excellent year-round destination for families in the Seattle area. It has stunning scenery, two sandy stretches, tidepool and two short easy hikes. Rosario Head trail makes for one of the best sunset hikes near Seattle.
Rosario Beach Guide – Things To Do
Here are all the things you can see / expect to do at Rosario Beach. All of these things are within 2-5 mins of walk from the Rosario Beach parking lot.
1. Rosario Beach and Sharp Cove Beach
There are two beaches – Rosario Beach and Sharp Cove. Both the beaches are calm and beautiful. The sand and driftwood gives kids plenty to play with after they have had their share of water time. The beaches are definitely more crowded in the summers.

2. Rosario Head Hike
Rosario Head Trailhead – After almost an hour of tossing between the two beaches, we walked up the Rosario Head trail. The trail is less than 0.25 miles that starts at the Maiden of Deception Pass totem pole and takes you on a bluff overlooking the Rosario straight.
The difficulty level of the trail is easy. My 2.5 year old toddler and 70+year old parents could easily do it.
If you are in a rush, it won’t take you more than 15-20 mins to hike up, check out the views and come back. We ended up spending an hour here taking in the sweeping views and enjoying the breathtaking sunset.
Scenic views, photography and sea-life from Rosario Head – The views from the bluff are simply jaw dropping. This is a great place to spot orcas and porpoises. Some say you could spot a grey whale if lucky, but we were not that lucky!
The occasional boat passing by, the Olympic mountains in the distance, the islands around, the changing sky colors of sunset – you could sit here watching this scene forever.
This place is a great backdrop for family photos or just any kind of scenic photography.
3. Rosario Beach Tidepools
When the tide recedes, Rosario Beach is a great tide pooling spot to explore diverse aquatic life.
In summers, you will find naturalists with displays of many species of marine life. Our kid spent almost 30 mins touching and feeling all the different specimens on display.
If you love tidepooling and want to explore more locations around PNW, then Tonge Point Marine Life Sanctuary in Port Angeles is a top destination.
4. Maiden of Deception Pass
Between the two beaches, there is Maiden of Deception Pass, a pole carving based on a Samish legend. Samish is a Native American tribe that has been present in this area for the past 3,000 years.
As you arrive at the pole carving, you will find beaches on both its sides – the Rosario beach and the Sharpe Cove.
5. Diving and Snorkeling
Rosario Beach also sees its fair share of divers who swim upto Urchin Rock to explore the underwater marine life. We have seen divers here but never done it ourselves.
6. Rosario Beach to Bowmany Bay Hike
Rosario beach to Bowman Bay is a very scenic 1 mile hike that takes you through a forested bluff overlooking Sharpe cove and Bowman bay. This route may require oversight of younger kids at a few spots in the hike as the trail maybe too close to the edge. Other than that it is a short and a very scenic trail.
We did this hike on a separate visit with my 4 year old and my parents who are in their 70s and we had no problems. You can rent a kayak at Bowman bay as an additional activity.
You can further extend your hike from Bowman Bay to Lighthouse Point for a longer adventure.
Getting To Rosario Beach
Rosario Beach Directions
Located in Deception Pass State Park in Anacortes, Rosario Beach is a 1.5 hour drive from Seattle. Follow I-5 N upto Burlington and then take SR20. From SR20, you will take Rosario road to get to Rosario beach.
As you enter the state park boundaries, you will be greeted by tall trees and a peek of the water views which immediately sets you in a relaxing mood.

Discover Pass is required. Plenty of parking spots available. But will get busy in summer and during weekends.
Tips for Visiting Rosario Beach
- Estimated Activity Time – You can estimate ~1-2 hours for this activity i.e. spending time at Rosario Beach, taking the trail to the bluff and spending time on the bluff. Add to that drive time from Seattle whic would be 3 hours for round-trip. So a total of 5-6 hours.
- Restroom facilities – available near parking lot. Clean and well maintained.
- Cellular network – available
- Food – Not available at the location, but you will find plenty of options in driving distance near Aancortes downtown. For Quick Service Restaurant options, there are many along I-5 at Burlington, Arlington, Everett, Lynnwood, etc to get a variety of take outs.
- Stay – There are many campgrounds, hotels, motels, and Airbnbs around this area stretch. Any stay option around Anacortes or Burlington or Mt.Vernon will make for a convenient stay location.
Kid and Family Trip Report
- Infants (upto 1 year) – Very easy for parents to carry in a carrier around the beach and on the trail.
- Toddlers (1-3 years) – Safe and hassle-free for toddlers. However, you want to watch them at all times while on Rosario Head bluff.
- Pre-school (3-5 years) and above – Can enjoy the beaches and the trail independently. But you want to watch the younger kids on the Rosario Head bluff in case they get too close to the edge.
- Families – Great for older parents, group or family activity. My 70+ years old parents enjoyed the beaches and the short gentle hike up the bluff.
Rosario Beach Trip Planning
- Day trip – I would highly recommend making a day trip to Rosario Beach any time of the year. The greenery of the state park boundaries, the beaches and the sweeping sunset views are too good to miss. Our favorite time to go here is actually in winter. The long drive serves well as toddler / kid naptime.
- Weekend trip – Deception Pass State Park is amazing for a weekend trip. Additional activities include kayak / paddleboard in Bowman bay; hike to Lighthouse Point and Lottie Point, enjoying scenic views from Deception Pass bridge; visit North Beach for some more beach time and views of the bridge. You can enjoy many other attractions at Whidbey Island and Fidalgo island.
- Pit stop on a longer road trip – This is a great pit-stop if you are on a longer roadtrip from Seattle to Vancouver B.C. or beyond. It is a beautiful spot to break the drive.
- Best time to visit – Year-round – summer, spring, fall, winter,
Final Thoughts
Rosario Beach and Deception Pass state Park is a destination we end up visiting atleast once a year. We have visited in every season and cherished our time all year round.
